Welcome to the first-ever blog post from Chilltown Fitness—the start of something awesome. We’re here to share workout tips, strength and conditioning advice, nutrition hacks, and even some behind-the-scenes fun (yes, that includes embarrassing gym moments).

We’re kicking things off by diving into what’s happening inside our gym, how we’ve structured our CrossFit programming in Jersey City, and what you can expect in the coming weeks.

How We Started 2021 Strong

At the end of 2020, many of you were either new to CrossFit or getting back into training after months of quarantine. Our goal was to establish (or re-establish) a strong foundation with effective yet challenging movements.

We launched a strength cycle focused on back squats, shoulder presses, and deadlifts, sprinkled in some skill work and conditioning, and then asked for your feedback. After reviewing your responses, we made a few adjustments to keep things fresh, effective, and fun.

What We’re Doing Now at Chilltown Fitness

We’ve fine-tuned our programming to balance strength, skill, and conditioning while keeping the workouts engaging for our growing fitness community in Jersey City. Here’s what’s in store:

💪 Strength Training

We’re sticking to a progressive strength cycle, working with 5-3-1 rep schemes on deadlifts, front squats, and push presses. At the end of this cycle, you’ll get to test your new one-rep max—so be ready to hit new PRs!

🔥 Conditioning

You know the CrossFit mantra: "Constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity." We’re keeping workouts diverse with long, medium, and short sessions, using a mix of barbells, kettlebells, bodyweight exercises, and partner workouts (no, we’re not making you lift your partner… yet).

🤸 Gymnastics Skills

We’re putting an emphasis on gymnastics foundations, focusing on strict strength movements and EMOM (Every Minute on the Minute) skill work to help you improve coordination, body control, and efficiency.

🏋️ Olympic Lifting

Our Olympic lifting focus this cycle is on clean and jerks, while also improving overhead strength and front squat mechanics. Get ready to refine your technique and build serious power.

📊 Benchmark & Testing Days

Sundays are dedicated to testing your progress with a mix of:
Classic CrossFit benchmark workouts (The Girls, Hero WODs)
Past Open workouts
Other performance-based tests

This gives you a chance to track improvements and set new goals every few weeks.
